Sometimes you can feel like your career is holding you back. No matter what you do, you can’t get to where you want to go in life. Just earning money isn’t enough. You want to feel like you’re doing something valuable. You need to feel that it’s valuable.

In this post, we look at five ways you can get out of a rut.

Think Long-Term

Sometimes you can get so caught up in the day-to-day of your career that you forget to focus on the long-term. And that’s when the trouble can start. You get so bogged down in the day to day minutiae that you forget that there’s a bigger arc to your career. It’s not all about “solving the next problem.” It’s also about thinking about how you can position yourself for success in the future

Stop Trying To Impress

Trying to impress people can help you land a job, but it rarely makes for a good career strategy. Yes – you want to come off as professional. But the real value you offer has to do with the stress and strain that you can take off others. Instead of trying to impress them with your words, help them with your deeds. Doing stuff in the background will get people on your side. Eventually, they’ll come to rely on your, giving you power and authority. Senior managers will notice – and even if they don’t, it gives you great transferable skills you can apply in other companies.

Wear Glasses

Wearing glasses is one of the most potent things that you can do to enhance your career. It turns out that people perceive those who wear glasses are more capable and intelligent than those who don’t.

According to Eyeglasses.com, obtaining a new style is easy. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to take on a completely new look, almost overnight and get ahead in the workplace.

Create A Niche

If you want to make yourself extremely popular in the workplace, create a niche for yourself. The more you can become “the guy who does X,” the more valuable you become. Ideally, you need to be able to do something that nobody else can. Perhaps you’re the only one at your office who knows how your website backend works. Maybe only you can sort out the finances and manage the accounts. Whatever it is, find out as much as you can about it, educate yourself, and move forwards. By doing so, you’ll grow in confidence.

Lead On Something

Leaders don’t have to be people with official positions. Anyone can do it, so long as they have the knowledge and authority to do so.

This is why having a niche is so important. If you’re the only person who knows how to do something, then you naturally position yourself to lead on that topic, regardless of your actual rank or position.

You don’t have to even ask permission to do this usually. You can simply set up your own training and instruct other colleagues. People will immediately notice and conclude that you have “leadership material.” That’s what you want.
