Starting a new job can be an exciting but nerve-wracking time, regardless of whether you’re stepping into your very first role or transitioning into a brand-new career opportunity. Preparation is key to ensuring everything goes smoothly, allowing you to make the best first impression and set the stage for long-term success. Here are some of our top tips when starting your new job to ensure you become settled in no time.

Ready your desk space.

If you’re working remotely either part-time or full-time, make sure your workstation is set and ready to go ahead of time. Your office chair and monitor should be ready to go before your start date and you’ll likely receive your work laptop on your first day. If you’re headed to the office, you might need to sort your identification, too. Check uncertain details with your manager or HR department to prevent having to stand outside the building for someone to show up.

Plan your commute

Map out your journey ahead of time. Whether travelling by car, bus, or train, always expect delays and cancellations and come up with alternative routes or options. Living far from work? You may need to invest in a car. Luckily, it’s easy to find used cars in major cities like Leeds, Manchester, and London—just don’t forget to figure out where to park.

Confirm what is expected from you

It’s important to know what’s expected of you in order to meet your career goals, both in the long term and in the short term. Asking the right questions, and lots of them, demonstrates that you’re keen to do well here and stay for the long haul.

Get to know your manager and team as soon as possible, carefully read through your responsibilities, and read up on the core values of the business and its culture. Doing so can help you avoid unpleasant shocks when it comes to settling in.

Prepare your work outfit

First impressions count. It’s always better to be over-dressed than underdressed. Be one step ahead and find out the company’s dress code beforehand. You can always tone it down once you’ve found your feet, and when you work from home of course. Also, check the weather ahead of time. The last thing you need is to be caught short in a typical British downpour and have forgotten your big coat and umbrella.
